Florida Panther - Puma concolor coryi (cat of one color)

Florida Panther

Status - Endangered species

Range - Most Florida panthers are found south of central Florida, on national/state parklands, as well as surrounding private land.

Habitat - Optimally, a Florida panther needs about 200 square miles of relatively undisturbed land for the males and up to 75 square miles for a female. Due to commercial development, their habitat is shrinking rapidly and there is much less space available for these beautiful big cats.

Notes - The Florida Panther is a solitary cat, only coming together to breed. They are polygamous (mating with more than one partner). Florida Panthers are not black. They are a tan color sometimes with black tipping on the fur. Leopards and Jaguars come in a black form (melanistic). But if you look closely you can still see the cats' spots. They are more fitting to the name Black Panther. Forever Florida's staff and visitors have seen a panther on property and on a few special occasions have also seen a young cub.
